This is probably the question which is asked most often by a pet owner. If you are at work without filling in the water bowl, the chances are that your dog will be fine for the day as they can survive for up to 3 days without any access to water.

But there is a difference between surviving and good health. Any pet who has been deprived of water for this duration will require immediate attention and should be hydrated right away as they are guaranteed to be in poor health and may require medical assistance to avoid long term permanent damage. An animal’s body is made up of 80% water and any loss of more than 10% water can have serious implications.

How much Water should a Dog Drink?

Another very frequent question from a concerned pet owner is that how much water should a dog drink and the answer to that is that it depends on your pet’s diet, age, environment & health conditions. On an average a 10 Kg dog would need to drink 500 ml of water daily.

Symptoms of Dehydration in Dogs.

When a dog’s water level drops to below 4-5%, you may start seeing the signs of dehydration. The dog’s mouth, eyes and nose may appear to be drier than normal. They may become more lethargic and refuse to get up. If the dehydration is severe, the dog’s eyes may appear sunken into his skull and they might show a sign of shock which includes rapid heart rate, weakness, bright red gums, listlessness and maybe unconsciousness.

How to Rehydrate a Dog?

Offer Water –Offer your dog cool water or an electrolyte solution to help replace any electrolyte that have been lost.

Take your dog to a cool place - As soon as you think the dog is dehydrated, them him to a cool airconditioned place or a shady spot.

Stay Indoor for rest of the day – It’s a good idea to keep your dog indoor for a day or two if your dog suffers from mild dehydration.

Head to the Vet – If you think that the dog is severely dehydrated, do not take it lightly and immediately take him to your vet for medical assistance.

How to Prevent Dehydration in Dogs?

Dehydration is much easier to prevent than to treat. Following are the best tips –

  • Keep a bowl of water accessible at all times – Make sure that your dog has water available by buying a good quality pet bowl or a pet fountain which has constant running fresh clean water.
  • Bring a water bottle when heading out – Keep a pet water bottle with you when you head to a nearby park or you know that you will be stuck in traffic for hours.
  • Don’t over expose your dog to high temperatures – Limit your dog ‘exposure to the heat to ensure that he does not loose water at an accelerated rate.
  • Add something tasty to the water – Encourage your dog to drink more water by adding something tasty such as small piece of fruit or a splash of fruit juice like strawberry or pineapple.
  • Consider Canned Food – Canned food are full of water which will increase the amount of water your dog consumes on daily basis.
