This is probably the question which is asked most often by a pet owner. If you are at work without filling in the water bowl, the chances are that your dog will be fine for the day as they can survive for up to 3 days without any access to water.
But there is a difference between surviving and good health. Any pet who has been deprived of water for this duration will require immediate attention and should be hydrated right away as they are guaranteed to be in poor health and may require medical assistance to avoid long term permanent damage. An animal’s body is made up of 80% water and any loss of more than 10% water can have serious implications.
How much Water should a Dog Drink?
Another very frequent question from a concerned pet owner is that how much water should a dog drink and the answer to that is that it depends on your pet’s diet, age, environment & health conditions. On an average a 10 Kg dog would need to drink 500 ml of water daily.
Symptoms of Dehydration in Dogs.
When a dog’s water level drops to below 4-5%, you may start seeing the signs of dehydration. The dog’s mouth, eyes and nose may appear to be drier than normal. They may become more lethargic and refuse to get up. If the dehydration is severe, the dog’s eyes may appear sunken into his skull and they might show a sign of shock which includes rapid heart rate, weakness, bright red gums, listlessness and maybe unconsciousness.
