Dog beds may not be the most expensive part of caring for your dog, but they do cost money and may not be easy to replace if you neglect to take care of them properly.

If you are wondering how to clean a dog bed then follow these simple steps which will ensure that it lasts as long as possible.

Step 1: Remove the cover

Start by taking your pet’s bed outside, then remove its cover. Many types have a zipper on one end; take off any straps that hold it on. You may have to cut through ties or strings that secure it before you can unzip and remove it.

If your dog’s bed is large, it might help to use two people when removing it: Have one person hold each end while you unzip and then pull out each side.

Step 2: Add a good detergent

You'll want to use a good detergent when washing your dog bed. An easy way to tell if your detergent is good is by looking at it in store and reading reviews online.

Using Tide or another detergent that has strong reviews can be a good way to wash dog beds, but you have other options as well! A lot of people just use soap with water, or they use OxyClean. It all comes down to personal preference!

Step 3: Rinse it off

Dryer sheets and other items used for dry cleaning contain chemicals that can irritate your dog’s skin. To make sure your dog gets an all-natural clean, simply air out his bed in a well-ventilated area for a few hours after it dries from washing.

To hasten drying time and reduce wrinkles, consider placing your dog’s bed on a drying rack in direct sunlight—but be sure it is completely dried before allowing your pup back inside! If you want to use fabric softener or dryer sheets when you wash your dog’s bed, be sure they are made of 100% natural ingredients such as cotton balls soaked in lavender essential oil.

Step 4: Hang it up to dry

No one wants their dog’s bed to smell. Make sure it dries thoroughly before giving it back to your pup. If you like, you can even add some dryer sheets or a sachet of potpourri once it’s dry, but be warned—dogs are not known for being obedient when presented with exciting scents.

You might also want to take out its inner stuffing so that your dog doesn’t try and eat them after rolling around in its own filth; there should be a zipper along one edge of your dog bed, opening into a rectangular hollow where you can stash some new filling. (If there isn’t, then make sure you secure any loose seams before washing.)

How to clean microfiber dog beds

Most microfiber fabrics are machine-washable, but special care should be taken when cleaning them. If you can’t follow these instructions properly, then take your cover to a professional laundromat or dry-cleaner for laundering. It's better than risking damage to your pet's bedding by doing it yourself!

However, if you do wash your covers at home, remember that all detergents should be mild and unscented, both for your own safety and that of your pet. Also, remember not to put any soft covers in the dryer - leave them flat on a clean surface until they're completely dry.

How to clean faux fur pet beds

Most faux fur is machine-washable. The best way to clean faux fur is by using your washing machine. Simply use mild detergent and cold water, then let tumble dry. You can always take it from there if you want to use an iron or steamer, though that's not strictly necessary.
